 | | Bowes Museum, Teeside (35 images)
The Bowes Museum is a hidden treasure, a jewel in the heart of beautiful Teesdale. The magnificent building stands proud in the historic market town of Barnard Castle housing internationally significant collections of fine and decorative arts.
Purpose built in the 19th century by John and Joséphine Bowes, the Museum has a wonderful story to tell.

 | | Hertford Castle (17 images)
Hertford Castle was built on a site first fortified by Edward the Elder around 911.
By the time of the Norman Invasion in 1066, a motte and bailey were on the site surrounded by a moat.

 | | Mountfitchet Castle & Toy Museum (60 images)
It is believed to have been an early Iron Age fort and Roman, Saxon and Viking settlement. In 1066 the site was attacked by the Normans and Robert Gernon, the Duke of Boulogne, built his castle here, making it his chief seat and the head of his Barony.
The Toy Museum is the largest privately-owned toy museum in Europe with over 80,000 individual items

 | | Knebworth House and Gardens (36 images)
The home of the Lytton family since 1490, when Thomas Bourchier sold the reversion of the manor to Sir Robert Lytton, Knebworth House was originally a genuine red-brick Late Gothic manor house, built round a central court as an open square.

 | | The Knights of Royal England (29 images)
The Spectacular Knights of Royal England partake in battle at the grounds of Knebworth House for a medieval jousting competition.

 | | Scotts Grotto in Ware (18 images)
Scott's Grotto is a series of interconnected chambers, extending some 67ft into the chalk hillside. It is thought to have taken 30 years to complete. The chambers and tunnels are lined with shells, flints and pieces of coloured glass. On top of the hill above the tunnels there is a summer house which would have commanded a wonderful view over the town of Ware.

 | | Hitchen Lavender Fields & St Mary's (15 images)
Lavender has been associated with Hitchen for 400 years, and at it's peak in the Victorian era there were 100 acres grown in the town. The farm has ideal soil for growing lavender and with the free draining chalk hill facing west, it also has good views of Hitchens famous landmarks.
Since 792 AD St Mary's has been a place of prayer and celebration for people in hard times and good.

 | | Stondon Transport Museum (34 images)
Take trip down Memory Lane, seeing bygone vehicles from the beginning of the century up to modern day classics, most of which originate from the largest private collection in the country plus more recent aquisitions making a total of over 350 exhibits.

 | | Wimpole Hall (41 images)
First built in 1643 and much altered by subsequent owners, Wimpole has developed into the largest country house in Cambridgeshire.
Evidence of the work of all of these architects can be seen today, but the most notable work is that of Soane. Examples include: the Bathhouse, Book Room and the striking Yellow Drawing Room

Royston Cave is unique in Europe. Believed to date from the 13th Century, it is a man-made cavern in the shape of a beehive, with a small aperture at the top for ventilation. Its most remarkable feature is an extensive range of wall carvings.

 | | Dudley Castle (58 images)
The castle was first founded in 1071 and is a classic example of a motte and bailey castle.
During the civil war, the castle was a Royalist stronghold but surrendered in 1646 following the defeat of Charles 1 at Naseby.

The ruins of St Mary's Church in Clophill is located in a small hamlet between Bedford and Luton. The abandoned Church is estimated to be up to 400 years old and stands on high ground in an isolated postion to the north of Clophill village.

 | | Swiss Garden at Old Warden (65 images)
The Swiss garden was created by the third Lord Ongley between 1820 and 1835 in the Swiss pictueresque manner.
In 1872, Old Warden Park was purchased by Joseph Shuttleworth, a wealthy Victorian industrialist.
Between 1976 and 1980, the garden was restored by Bedfordshire Council and opened in 1981.

 | | Calke Abbey, Ticknall, Derbyshire (92 images)
Founded in the early 12th century, Calke Abbey was established by Richard, 2nd Earl of Chester, a wealthy landowner. Set in a hollow, and in a secluded position, Calke Abbey is a fascinating mixture of architectural styles.
Between 1701-1704, the house underwent a huge rebuilding project, resulting with the house being entirely remodelled.

 | | Ashby de la Zouch Castle (59 images)
It originated as a Norman fortified manor house in the 12th century founded by Alain de Parrhoet, la Zouch.
During the next three centuries it was extended.
In 1464 it was granted by Edward IV to William, Lord Hastings who converted it into a castle.
The castle has been host to many royal visitors, including Henry VII, Mary Queen of Scots, James I and Charles I.

 | | Breedon on the Hill - Derbyshire (19 images)
Breedon is most noticeable for its carboniferous limestone hill which rises 122 m above a generally flat landscape and provides distant views across several counties. A large portion of the hill has been cut away by an active quarry operated by Ennstone Johnston.
On top of the hill is a church with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. Evidence of settlements have also been traced back to antiquity.

The Custard Factory, Chamberlain Square, The Hyatt Hotel, Birmingham Town Hall, The Bullring, Blondin was a tightrope walker who famously crossed Niagra Falls but he also toured the UK where amongst other feats he crossed Edgbaston Reservoir.

 | | Tamworth Castle and Grounds (89 images)
Tamworth Castle is a Norman motte and bailey castle set in the south-west corner of what was a Saxon burgh, it's located to dominate the approach over the two rivers which meet below the Castle. Its sandstone walls and superb herringbone wall - all that survives of the "curtain wall" of the bailey are believed to date from the 1180s.
